Esquire Magazine: The great virtue 'of Cannonau

Esquire Magazine: The great virtue 'of Cannonau
Mehmet Oz, is a leading cardiologist Professor of Surgery at Columbia University known for his studies on the benefits health of various ethnic diets

In a recent article in Esquire Magazine, Oz has highlighted the principles of Japanese green tea, Indian curry, and he, of Sardinian wine.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, writes Oz is the island of Cannonau, red wine, which "contains 5 to 10 times the procyanidins
- powerful cardivascolari antioxidants that give positive effects - of many other varieties of wine. "

Depend on what they drink or not, the Sardinians are known as rather long-lived people, with a very high percentage of centenarians compared not only to the United States but also compared to the rest of Italy.

Turriga, Sardinian ambassador in the world

Il Turriga project sees the light in 1988 when James comes to Serdiana Tachis, already famous for Tignanello and Sassicaia. First you need to change the vineyards, and Argiolas refer them from beginning to end.
canopy plants are replaced by those from a sapling in 230 hectares of vineyards in all four taken between 250 and 300 meters above sea level.

In 1991 the first bottles ready, but the shelves are full because nobody knows this wine in Sardinia. The way the marketing was very slow and long, even if luck did not deny a hand every now and then, as in the case of the famous dinner at San Lorenzo restaurant in London between President Francesco Cossiga and Sir Charles Forte, who opened the Turriga the doors of the very important UK market.

Since then, a resounding success after another:
- the gold medal at the 1993 Vinitaly from beginner Turriga '88,
- the three stars on driving Veronelli
- the three glasses in the direction of Gambero Rosso for the wines of the years '92, '93, '94 and '95 for the exceptional,
- Wine of the Year 2000 by the Italian Sommeliers,
- the five-star hotel in the Other on-line guide to all vintages tasted.

In 1996, Christie's London auction on the Internet puts a lot of bottles of Turriga '93 By Robert Parker, then the Turriga is exposed in the windows in the showroom of Valentino Via Condotti in Rome and presented to the cocktail of Giorgio Armani and Bulgari in New York to Geneva.

The Turriga is a blend in varying percentages of native Sardinian grape. There are Cannonau, Carignano and Malvasia Bovale, planted with tree or espalier on poor soils, stony and stony, from very low yields and harvesting is done by hand and in the early morning and a fast delivery to the winery not to begin the fermentation process to 'open air and out of control.
Maceration lasts 16 to 18 days with high temperatures at the beginning, but which are then reduced with cooling to prevent excessive extraction of polyphenols. After some decanting, and a sizing, two years of aging in French oak barrels and aged for three more years in bottle. The Turriga has a dark ruby \u200b\u200bcolor with garnet, is transparent but not completely, because it has a catchy density. The bouquet, very intense, evolving by swirls of flavors ranging from ripe fruits such as blackberry, plum, berries and even to those of the myrtle jam once.

His incredible program develops then stay in the mouth of spices, cocoa, cinnamon, licorice, tobacco and judicious use of vanilla. The taste is dry, with refreshing acidity, this wine robust, full-bodied, but a rounded, smooth, well balanced in tannins, balanced and excellent. Alcohol 12.5%.
The combination with the dishes would be more appropriate with red meat sauce flavored with roasted and braised, spit-roasted piglet, knows cordula, pecorino cheese.

Cannonau "stretch" the life ...

The scientific journal Nature, rewards Sardinian wines through a search William Harvey Institute in London which shows how the Cannonau Sardinian, namely the one coming from the vineyards of Barbagia, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, contribute to the long life.

This research has established that the Sardinian Cannonau, prince of wines of Sardinia, has a variety of polyphenols, substances with high antioxidant content, crucial to the fight against cholesterol and atherosclerosis, between 5 and 10 times higher than the fees Australian wines, South African and American.

Only in a region of France (Gers), we found the same concentration of pigments and tannins in the wine and the corresponding longevity of its inhabitants.
The method of production and cultivation, but especially the quality of grapes, are the ingredients of segreto di tali benefici.

Nature 2006
Abstract dell'articolo
Oenology: Red wine procyanidins and vascular health".
"Regular, moderate consumption of red wine is linked to a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and to lower overall mortality, but the relative contribution of wine's alcohol and polyphenol components to these effects is unclear. Here we identify procyanidins as the principal vasoactive polyphenols in red wine and show that they are present at higher concentrations in wines from areas of southwestern France and Sardinia, where traditional production methods ensure that these compounds are efficiently extracted during vinification. These regions also happen to be associated with increased longevity in the population. "

Sardinian red wines are best to protect the heart

Researchers at Queen Mary University and the University of Glasgow said that red wines from France and Italy are the best to protect the heart, because they contain higher concentrations of procyanidins, antioxidants that contribute to cardiovascular health.

seems that the wine Cannonau of Nuoro, Sardinia, and Madiran wine of Gers, in the foothills the Pyrenees, are particularly rich in polyphenols.
Numerous studies have confirmed that one or 2 glasses of red wine per day have beneficial effects on the heart and moderate drinkers are less likely to suffer from heart disease than teetotalers.

British researchers have identified a particular group of polyphenols, known as oligomeric procyanidins, which would be able to provide the greatest degree of protection to the cells of blood vessels.
The procyanidins suppress production of endothelin-1, a protein that has a vasoconstrictor effect.
the procyanidins, which are the precursors catechin and epicatechin responsible intensity, tone, color and dell'imbrunimento of must / grape juice and wine are part of the family and as a result of grape polyphenols are present in grape juice, and wine.

They are found as single units or monomers, or linked as dimers, trimers, oligomers and polymers, as has been said, have a strong antioxidant activity on free radicals due to the properties of their phenolic groups to donate electrons .

This specific property has a significant therapeutic value and is used to reduce the damage caused by free radicals.
the procyanidins are present in higher concentration in red grapes and, inside the berry, are located in the inner wall of seeds and peel. Through technologies of extraction and processing of organic grapes, you can get grape / grape juices and wines with high contents of these important antioxidants.

Then with the knowledge of James Tachis we set other rules: no to the transplants, so the enhancement of autochthonous and our territory. Thus was born the

Turriga :
- Cannonau 85%
- Bovale Malvasia and 10% for black
- Carignano to 5%,
a choice of varieties is not random because we wanted to achieve an important wine, which speaks of Sardinia, who had lived a good structure, good smells and good style. To make

Turriga it takes 18-20 months in barrique and another 12 months in bottle. The year 1997 was a mild winter and a summer with spikes of hot weather in July. Only with a manic attention to the care of plants and processing could be born in a wine cellar mysterious, exuberant, strong character, just as they are in Sardinia.
a philosophy that continues today with the winemaker Mariano Murru Argiolas and with the fourth generation. "

Argiolas Franco also said the 'origin of the name Turriga : "At a dinner - told Argiolas - while we were browsing Tachis ancient maps Turriga we found the name, just in the area where the statue was found oldest of Sardinian. His mother Mediterranean. "

"It is a small producer that I met by chance - says Mario Lutzoni - and that every year produces about 2 000 bottles of sparkling wine, made from grapes Vermentino and cannonau. One of the major problems that often characterizes the small Sardinian vineyards is precisely the lack of product availability, combined with a reluctance to market the labels on new sales channels as alternatives to traditional ones.
International awards
Mario Lutzoni efforts were rewarded, however, and the wine in the hotel restaurant Cala di Volpe, which now includes about 70 labels sardines out of a total of 450 Italian and foreign references, has recently been rewarded by the U.S. magazine Wine Spectator wine list as milgior the world for the attention paid to producers of the island. - Turriga 2004 Antonio Argiolas
- Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori Attilio Contini

Here's the official comment to the assessment provided by Gambero Rosso Slow Food and :

memorable year, this, for the Sardinian enology. If last year we won four wines, with an increase this year are less than twelve exciting labels from three glasses. A result that is unbelievable, apparently. But that, very simply underlines the commitment and effort that this sector has made over the last decade, bringing to fruition a process of modernization of wineries, vineyard restructuring, selection of varieties.

If only in the eighties, with a park less than 30 thousand hectares of vineyards were roughly fifty wineries sardines in the business today, with the roof of the eclipsed 30 thousand hectares, the number of players coming onto the market with a brand has more than doubled.

In this region, where large and small companies coexist harmoniously, and where there is a wealth of native grapes and wines rich, we work hard to give full expression to these hidden treasures.

A quick overview on the award-winning wines sees Sella & Mosca ranks first, the island's best known companies in the world, which this year will exceed two wins and three glasses, one with a great version of the Marquis of Villamarina '03, probably the most attractive product on the banks Cabernet Sauvignon Mediterranean, and the other with a new wine, the Cuvée Alghero Torbato Terre Bianche 161, '07, a white man who has charmed his debut for the expressive depth and the mineral richness.

the Argiolas winery has given us an excellent edition of Turriga, the '04, with a great risk of repeat Korem '06 and '05 Angialis sweet. Shields on another classic, Carignano Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune of '04 Santadi cellar, which is "co-author" of one of the good news of this edition, red '05 Barrua Agricola Punica of the partnership, joint venture between Santadi, Niccolò Incisa della Rocchetta and James Tachis, which, among the many merits , is also attributed to have been the engine of renewal of enology of the region with its more than twenty years, and valuable advice. The Sardus

Pater Sant'Antioco is one of the finest examples of modern but fell in the area, which uses the traditional heritage. From its ancient vineyards a sapling on the coast comes a series of impeccable wines that has the cutting edge of the Carignano Sulcis Arenas '05.

And so the Old Farms Jerzu, that repeating the success of last year with the Best Josto Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva '05. Continuing the theme of Cannonau here's another great satisfaction for us that Joseph Gabbas Dule brought an excellent Reserve '05 (and almost as good Arbeskia '05), and the seals of Solothurn, the Cannonau Keramos Reserve '04. Alessandro Dettori is confirmed grower passionate and attentive, and earns three glasses with his excellent Dettori Bianco '06 One Year Later, deep and complex.

deserved to finish two more awards: the Old Gregori of Contini, not new to these awards, and another pearl of island, also the daughter of ancient traditions, Malvasia di Bosa Brothers Porcu of '05, which we hope will be an example of small growers in the area.

The Wines of Sardinia

After Sicily is the second largest Mediterranean island and can be too easily overlooked or lumped-in with the wines of Sicily and southern Italy, instead of being considered as a separate wine region. The whites of are fairly well-known, but many of the red Sardinian wines too are worth considering.

Lying in the Tyrrhenian Sea and with its northernmost part roughly at the height of mainland Naples, Sardinia is fairly distinct from the other five southern areas. It is hotter even than , and produces strong distinct flavoured wines.Sardinia has produced wine since the time of the Phoenicians, a good thousand years before Christ. Since then it has been invaded and influenced by many other different wine cultures. The Romans were there over 200 years BC; followed later by Byzantines and then the Spaniards from 1324 and for four hundred years that followed.

The white Vermentino may be among the best-known of the varieties, but, for example, the in the north of the country, can claim quite a distinctive flavour of its own compared with Vermentino grown elsewhere in Italy.

Some historians say that many of the grapes in Sardinia are of English origin, but other research establish that Sardinian varieties are totally different. Native varieties include the and the Sardinian version of .

The red is by far the biggest contributor to the Sardinian wine market.
It is rich in other DOC varieties, which include the red and , and the whites and - most carrying that extra denomination of 'di Cagliari'.

There followed an old-gold or amber-coloured , at a full-bodied 14.5%. This had a determined aroma, strong and musty, with a hint of honey.

And don't forget an excellent 15% : this is a true dessert almost sherry-like wine, made from a single grape variety, with a minimum age of 2 years in wood, which allows the formation of a yeast film during its maturing.
